In her continuous drive to advocate for quality education; raising excellent, Godly and well-rounded children, Meadow Hall Education hosted Miss Zuriel Oduwole and her father, Mr. Ademola Oduwole on Friday, 27 April 2017.
Meadow Hall welcomed this highly accomplished teenager, giving her the platform at the school assembly hall to inspire students as well as answer a few questions. She spoke in depth about her filmmaking project, which was inspired by her desire to show Africa in a positive light. Her last documentary, called ‘A promise in Africa’ was focused on Nigeria. The movie aired in cinemas in Nigeria, South Africa, England, Ghana and Japan. ‘Age is no obstacle’ she said when asked by a student how she was able to accomplish all this so early. She stressed the importance of finding what one loves doing, and then following through.
Her Education project was next on the agenda. She spoke about the reason for meeting the different world leaders, which is to discuss policies to ensure their children not only go to school, but also have access to quality education. Her passion stemmed from a trip to Ghana, aged 9, when she saw a group of girls hawking on the street instead of being in school. This is what Zuriel and Meadow Hall have in common. Just getting children to school is not enough; a holistic, well-rounded education is critical for children to reach their full potential. This commitment is shown not only in their delicate blend of the British and Nigerian Curricula, but also in the Meadow Hall Edutainment Centre they recently opened in Lekki, which ensures children’s innate talents are identified and developed.
Zuriel Elise Oduwole is famous around the world for her advocacy for girls’ education and for her filmmaking. Born in the US to a Nigerian father and Mauritian mother, she has gone on to accomplish a lot despite her tender years, meeting with 24 Presidents and Prime Ministers. In 2013, Zuriel was listed in the New African Magazine’s list of ‘100 Most Influential People in Africa’ and the following year, as the world’s most powerful 11 year old in New York’s Business Insider’s listing of the ‘World’s Most Powerful Person At Every Age’. Since then, she has continued to meet with world leaders to tackle the issue of ‘out of school children’, especially girls.
Zuriel’s parting words to Meadow Hall students will hopefully linger long in their minds; ‘I hope I can inspire you all to find something you’re passionate about; to work hard at it, in order to be whatever you want to be when you’re older’. She also graciously thanked the school for hosting her and making her and her father feel at home.
