World Refugee Day was set aside by the United Nations to send a message to governments and the public on the need to support refugees. “In a world where violence forces thousands of families to flee for their lives each day, there is no better time to show global stand with refugees.”

In his video statement released earlier today, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, said “On World Refugee Day, it’s time to recognise their humanity in action – and challenge ourselves, and others, to join them – in receiving and supporting refugees in our schools, neighbourhoods, and workplaces. This is where solidarity starts – with all of us.”

In Nigeria, there are millions of internally displaced people due to the insurgency in the North-East. Although, a number of Non-Governmental Organisations and government parastatals are doing something about their welfare, we can all agree that their standard of living is not at par, hence a need to do more. Many IDPs, especially children, are malnourished, have pneumonia or other health related issues, and some die due to the extreme living conditions they are exposed to.
